Which material is best for roofing?
All three materials can be used for roofs. The difference is that PTFE is best suited for large-span, permanent roof structures; PVDF works well for cost-sensitive or semi-permanent buildings; and ETFE is ideal for lightweight roofs that require high transparency, such as greenhouses and domes. PE fabric is typically used for temporary or short- to medium-term roofing solutions at a low cost.

In many applications, ETFE can partially or fully replace glass. ETFE is much lighter than glass materials, which reduces structural loads, and it also offers excellent impact resistance.

PTFE and ETFE are both very low-maintenance. PTFE has excellent self-cleaning properties and resists dirt buildup, while ETFE has a smooth surface that can be easily cleaned by rain. PVDF may accumulate more surface dust over time, but its maintenance cost is still lower than many traditional building materials. PE is durable and UV-resistant but may need occasional cleaning to remove dust.
PVDF and PE are usually the most cost-effective options. They provide a good balance between performance, durability, and price, making them widely used for commercial canopies, industrial buildings, agricultural structures, and other temporary or semi-permanent structures.
Yes, all three materials meet fire safety requirements, though performance levels vary. PTFE is non-combustible and offers the highest fire resistance. ETFE will shrink away from flames rather than drip and complies with many international fire codes. PVDF is flame-retardant, but its fire rating is generally lower than PTFE. PE is combustible but can meet fire safety standards if properly treated with flame retardants.
PTFE and ETFE perform particularly well in extreme weather conditions. They have a strong resistance to extreme temperatures, humidity, as well as snow and wind loads.
